Skin Care

Acne is something that I think everyone gets at one point or another in their life. I can’t say I have experienced it as much as some or to a terrible extent, but here and there my skin likes to be annoying. I have never used any of the commercial products like Proactive, Murad, etc. What I do use is witch-hazel. My mom and my grandma introduced me to it a few years ago, and it is literally amazing. Right when you see a pimple coming it, you put some witch-hazel on a cotton round and rub it all over your face. Within the next day or so, redness goes down, and/or the blemish goes away all together.

Witch hazel has a high concentration of something called tannins, which is naturally occurring polyphenol that acts as an astringent. Polyphenols are a class of chemicals that are formed by lots and lots of phenol units (which is a benzene ring with an –OH group attached). If you want to find out more about this, I am sure there is tons of info on the internet.  Anyway, simply said, if you have a hard time finding something to clear your skin, try witch hazel. I have used a few different brands, and found that they all work the same on my skin. Dickinson’s tends to be my go to though. For anyone who wears makeup, with hazel can also act as a makeup remover, and helps tone your pores by removing any dirt and oil from your skin. Below is a link to a site I found that lists some more useful ways you can add witch hazel to your daily routine!
