I would say I have a pretty god foundation of knowledge about exercising, and which motions work which muscle and what not. Before we get into my favorite muscle exercises, I want to talk about cardio. Most people hate the boring forms of cardio like running on a treadmill or doing the elliptical etc. If you are trying to lose weight and/or keep a certain figure, cardio actually is not completely necessary. I am a true believer that if you keep your diet clean about 80% of the time, and do maybe 2 or 3 cardio sessions a week, you can get to where you want. Now, if you are trying to do the extreme like the bikini body shows, then that’s a different story. But, if you are just trying to exercise for good health, then you don’t need to to do hours upon hours of cardio. It’s just not necessary when paired with healthy eating habits. I know it can be hard to always eat healthy because who doesn’t love sweets? But like I said, if you can make healthier diet choices about 80% of the time, then you are on a good path. I usually like to leave the weekends for myself to indulge a bit more.
When it comes to setting fitness oriented goals for yourself, whether that be lifting heavier weight, running faster, or losing weight, the desire to achieve has to come from within. This applies to all goals in life, really. You cannot base your goals on what someone else wants, or do something because someone else thinks that is what you should do. If you are reading this and thinking “who is this girl to tell me how to eat and exercise” that is not what I am doing at all. I am just sharing what I have noticed that works for my own body and personal goals. The drive behind goals also cannot come from self-hate. Do not try to achieve a goal if you do not first love yourself because chances are, you will not follow through, or you will, and that happiness you were looking for will not come along with the achievement. Self love, now that will get you where you want to be. Loving yourself is so important. We are all unique artworks of DNA that no one else could ever be. So, before you set a goal in any aspect of life, reflect on your emotions and see if that self love is there. If is not, it is something you can always work on, starting by simply listing off all that is great about you! As MLK once said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” This can be applied to loving others, but also to loving yourself.
Okay, now back to the gym stuff. I will link helpful pictures an videos of each exercise i mention below. When working my legs which includes quads, hamstrings, and glutes, wide-stance barbell squats and Romanian deadlifts with free-weights are hands down my favorite thing to do. For arms, I love to do overhead tricep extensions, and plain and simple bicep curls. With back (which is probably my favorite to train) I love to do kneeling rows, inverted rows, and a bent over dumbbell row. When doing shoulders, I love front cable raises, front plate raises, and face pulls. Bodybuilding.com has a whole list of exercises you can try for each part of the body, along with a video and description of the exercise. I will link my favorite ones below and the general link where you can look up other exercises! Enjoy.
